No smoking in pubs is awesome

Posted by: Andy Botting In: Personal

Note to self: Don’t blog while drunk. It doesn’t make sense :)

Went out on Friday night to catch up with Shane. It was the first time i’d been out since they brought in the new anti-smoking laws, and it was awesome. It’s also funny seeing the smokers huddling outside in the cold, freezing their asses off. Maybe thats a little nasty.. i’m not sure, but I sure enjoy it.

We started off at Pugg Mahones on Hardware St, where I met Shane and some of his mates from his last job. Then a couple of us walked across the road to La La Lounge, where we enjoyed some expensive but fantastic Asahi’s.

We sat in the couches next to some Asian guys, who got us involved in the game they were playing. It was a mixture of paper, scissors, rock with dares, but he dares were so lame, but still funny.

Shihad at the Hi-Fi Bar

Went to see Shihad at the Hi-Fi bar on Thursday night. It was a pretty awesome show as usual. It’s been quite a while since i’d been to a gig, so in the back of my mind the whole time I was thinking how much better it’ll be once the new anti-smoking laws come into effect in a couple of weeks. Since the Hi-Fi bar is in the basement, you get this horrible haze of smoke that you just can’t escape.

I just got back from watching the Cats struggle a win over the Adelaide Crows. It was a very tough and tight game, but somehow, Geelong managed to get up in the last quarter. As usual, I was disappointed with a few of the umpires decisions. Seriously.. who’s keeping an eye on these guys? Is there a review panel about how shit some of their decisions are?

Geelong (def) v West Coast

Saw a spectacular game of football on Sunday afternoon. Geelong 16.13 (109) defeating West Coast  10.10 (70).

The reason I enjoyed this game so much was not only because Geelong beat the reigning premiers, or because West Coast had won every game since the season began, but because they played with such confidence. It was really impressive when Ling and Corey kept both Judd and Kerr from really picking up momentum like they usually do.

Geelong does have a habit of winning tough games but dropping the easy ones. I hope that this form continues anyway.

Suspend to Ram on a MacBook Pro

Posted by: Andy Botting In: Geek | Linux

I’m running Gentoo and Ubuntu Feisty on my MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo), and it just refused to resume after a suspend to ram. Let this be a note to anybody else going through the frustration that I was.

In /etc/default/acpi-support, I changed POST_VIDEO from true to false.

# Should we attempt to warm-boot the video hardware on resume?
POST_VIDEO=false

Works a treat now ;)

Andy: Champion of Consistency or Consistent Champion?

Posted by: Andy Botting In: Personal

So I took up running a little while ago, under the encouragement of Graham from work. Some guys from Customs host their own handicap running event on Mondays around the Flagstaff Gardens. I managed to take out the trophy to the Summer 06/07 season.

I think this is probably the first competitive trophy I have ever won. Unfortunately, I have to give it back to the next person to win. It does look good on my desk though :)

Apple announce the iPhone

At the MacWorld Keynote in San Francisco, Apple have announced the iPhone, along with Apple TV and other products.

I have been especially interested to see what the iPhone was actually going to be like. From my experience, every mobile phone that has ever been made is crap. Crap! They all lack something, whether it be bluetooth, or they just have a crap menu, or crap buttons.. I could go on forever. Apple have taken up the challenge of creating a revolutionary phone, that is actually revolutionary.

Some of the things I really like are that it’s a smartphone, but it doesn’t have a stylus. It doesn’t even have buttons on the front. It’s totally ‘touch’ driven.

It also has a sensor so that when you put the phone to your head, it will switch the display off to save power. It also has an accelerometer to detect whether the unit should be showing the display in portrait or landscape mode. That is just awesome.

Unfortunately, we probably won’t see the iPhone in Australia until 2008. Maybe by then we might actually have some decent mobile plans with bundled data, rather than the ridiculous prices we’re subjected to currently.

Check out the Macworld.com news cover and photos from the keynote on Mac Rumours.

One quote I found amusing from the Macworld.com news cover:

Closing the proceedings, pop singer John Mayer — who has stood on stage with Jobs several times over the past few years — played his hit songs “Gravity” and “Waiting On the World to Change.”

“Steve Jobs and Apple Inc. just make life more fun,” said Mayer in between songs. “It’s the exact opposite of terrorism.”

Bawhahahah!

NYE 2006

A fun night until Coach mixed me up some doozies at Tom’s place. It all went down-hill from there. I could ramble on about it, but the photos tell the story best.

Check out Andy’s photos of the night and Coach Murphy’s photos of the night.
(I think Coach’s photos are the best ;))

Crashing the Rialto Xmas Party and Aidan Leaving

Posted by: Andy Botting In: Personal

This is Jeremy, Andy, Aidan and Lexie at the Rialto christmas party. Jeremy tipped me off that they were having the Christmas party last Thursday evening, so Aidan and I thought we’d gate crash. It was free beer, wine and champagne for 2 hours (which kinda went to 3) and the best finger food I have ever had. Go Rialto!

So yesterday Aidan left us. She’s a mate of Jeremy’s from Canada that stayed with us for a couple of weeks. We showed her all the sights of Melbourne like: the Indian place, Stalactites, Dumplings, Parmas, etc. Funny how all the places we’d show a tourist are food related. Aidan is awesome because she smuggled a 1-litre bottle of maple syrup in her bag for us and cooked us pancakes on more that one occasion.

Anyway, I can’t wait for her to send us a copy of some awesome Canucks music.
