ABC iView on XBMC/Boxee

Posted by: Andy Botting In: Geek

A plugin for ABC iView on XBMC has been released. See this page for progress of ABC iView on XBMC.

I think it would be really neat to use ABC’s iView on the Xbox Media Centre (XBMC) and/or Boxee. Honestly, who really wants to watch TV on their computers? Haven’t we evolved from that now?

I’ve got a modded XBOX running XBMC, and I have various Linux boxes running XBMC and Boxee and I think they’re the perfect platform for something like iView.. especially because it’s unmetered traffic on iiNet, Internode and other great ISP’s.

I did a little research, and they seem to use Adobe’s Real Time Message Protocol (RTMP) to stream the video from their server to the iView client, which is written in Flash. Recent versions of XBMC and Boxee have code to support RTMP, which is also used by other digital content providers like NBC’s Hulu, and the BBC’s iPlayer.

I have managed to work out most of the iView’s XML stuff, which describes channels, programs, thumbnails, etc but not quite got there with the actual streaming part. I’m playing with rtmpdump, which is based on the rtmp code from XBMC/Boxee, and have almost worked out the URL part to get the server to stream. I just keep getting a message about not being able to find the specified stream.

If anyone out there on the interwhizzle has worked this stuff out, I’d love to hear from them. My googling hasn’t really revealed anything like what I’m after. If you’re interested in using iView on XBMC or Boxee, I’d like to hear from you also.

UPDATE: Please vote for an iView plugin for Boxee at the Customer Support Community for boxee. It might might help get iView into Boxee!

UPDATE 2: I’ve uploaded a basic plugin for XBMC. See: http://www.andybotting.com/wordpress/iview-for-xbmc-plugin-v02 for more info.

I’d love to see iView on Boxee as well. There has to be a way to use iView on TV with a remote control, and boxee seems the best way. You’ve gotten much further with it than anybody else I’ve found!

I saw that someone developed a BBC iPlayer plug-in for boxee, but I understand that its a whole different task.

I’m stuck just trying to get boxee work with VESA so I can see it on a TV with my Radeon card.

Keep up the good work!

I too would like to be able to watch iView on my Linux media box running XBMC. Unfortunately I’ve just started looking into this today so I have nothing to share as yet :P

I would appreciate you expanding more on your progress thus far. Where did you obtain the XML data?

Check out “XoT” for playing RTMP on the xbox. I can only assume that you can write a script similar to the “Southpark” one as it also uses RTMP. But you need to understand the XML data so you could hook it up correctly

Have a look here - http://code.google.com/p/xot-uzg/

Let me know if you have any luck with this

I’ve got some basic stuff working, and I’ll be publishing it very soon.
Unfortunately, the last few SVN checkouts of XBMC haven’t compiled :(

Andy, looking forward to seeing your work on this - think it’s a great tie in with xbmc. Cheers!

Me too! Even if you have just an embryonic script I’d love to see it. An XBMC/Boxee script would be the best, but I’d be happy enough just to have a command-line script that I can schedule to download specific shows so I can watch them later - but like you I haven’t been able to deduce the correct URL to download the RTMP stream.

XBMC is crying out for an iView plugin. I’d probably use iView more often if I didn’t have to use my PC. Granted, I can stream onto my laptop from anywhere in the house …. but it’s just not the same as sitting on the couch and watching something on TV!

Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Hi Brett,

Seems that ABC has enabled ‘SWF Verification’. This essentially means that they’ve locked us out. Unless they disable it, my XBMC plugin won’t work longer than about 60 seconds :(
